Overview
OUR COMMUNITY HISTORY IS ONE OF PEOPLE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE.

Wellesley is unique — offering its residents natural beauty, safe neighborhoods, superior educational
opportunities, a variety of recreational and cultural events, and a rich history. But what really
sets Wellesley apart are the extraordinary people who live here. Beginning with Horatio Hollis
Hunnewell, who built the Town Hall for use as a town hall and library in 1887, Wellesley’s leaders have been engaged and philanthropic. Today, we all benefit from their engagement in local affairs,
their commitment to building a strong community and their vision in imagining a better world for
future generations.
HOW WILL WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR THE FUTURE?
In 2006. Wellesley celebrated the 125th anniversary of its founding, having grown from a small rural
town to a thriving community of over 26,000 residents. What about the future? How can
we ensure that Wellesley will still be a desirable place for all its citizens to live when it celebrates its
250th anniversary?
The Fund for Wellesley is an endowment of the Foundation for MetroWest that supports
new ideas and creative solutions for Wellesley both short and long term. It was
established to raise and distribute money to deserving programs and projects that benefit the
Town and its residents. In addition, it complements and augments existing funds that have singular purposes.
The Fund for Wellesley serves as a resource for those who wish to ensure a vibrant town
that is responsive to a diversity of opportunities and needs. The Fund actively acts as a catalyst seeking new ideas, approaches
and collaborations through an intensive grant application process, bringing innovative thinking to issues big and small.
The Fund is not a substitute for public support of the Town’s operating and capital budgets.
Rather, it supports projects that go beyond what is essential by fostering services and programs that
ensure Wellesley remains a town of unique character and value.
Imagine how we might:
- develop a strong sense of community among all residents
- encourage generosity, tolerance and an appreciation of diversity
- keep our youth engaged with the community
- ensure that our senior citizens remain integrated into the life of the Town
- extend the rich cultural offerings of our area to every resident
- improve access to needed resources and services
- preserve and enhance our natural resources
- anticipate and address major issues facing our Town in the future
By making a contribution to The Fund for Wellesley, you are helping to build an endowment
that strengthens the community, creating pride of place among residents today and for years to come.
